Sexual Intrusive Thoughts & OCD Treatment

Sexual intrusive thoughts don’t define you.

They feel overwhelming, shameful, and impossible to talk about. But they’re a recognized pattern — and they’re treatable. Our therapists specialize in exactly this.

Sexual Intrusive Thoughts and OCD: This Is Treatable

If you’re experiencing unwanted sexual thoughts that feel disturbing, shameful, or completely out of character — you’re not broken, and you’re not dangerous. These are recognized symptoms of OCD, and they respond well to treatment.

Sexual intrusive thoughts are one of the most distressing — and most misunderstood — forms of OCD. People experiencing them often spend months or years convinced something is wrong with them as a person, when what’s actually happening is a well-documented anxiety pattern with a clear treatment path.

Sexual Intrusive Thoughts Don't Mean What You Think They Mean

In OCD, obsessions are unwanted, intrusive thoughts, while compulsions are mental and physical behaviors that provide temporary relief from these thoughts.

In Sexual OCD, obsessions often involve unwanted sexual thoughts about people who you don’t view in a sexual manner (such as friends, family members, children, etc.). Compulsions often include avoiding the person to prevent triggering these thoughts or repeatedly reassuring yourself that the thoughts are untrue.

What Treatment Looks Like at VPG

Our therapists use Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) — the gold-standard treatment for OCD — alongside Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help clients reduce the grip these thoughts have, without years of avoidance or reassurance-seeking. You don’t have to stop having the thoughts to get your life back. You have to change your relationship to them.

We see clients in Denver and virtually across most US states, so wherever you are, you can work with a therapist who actually specializes in this — not just someone who has read about it.
